While many students are more than likely aware of STLCC’s tutoring programs, as they are one of the main forms of support students seek out during the semester, STLCC offers many more programs and services that are not often talked about and therefore forgotten shortly after orientation.
Before moving on too quickly from the subject of tutoring, it is worth mentioning that, while walk-in help is most often what students use, one-on-one tutoring can be scheduled ahead of time through the Navigate 360 Hub. Additionally, online tutoring sessions are available and can be scheduled through the same hub. Tutoring is located in the Emerging Technology Center 207.
Campus Life is recognizable for some of the larger events they help coordinate, but it isn’t always clear how this organization is involved at STLCC. Student Activity Specialist Melody Walkenhorst helped shed some light on what Campus Life does.
“I think the gratest source of value in what my department does, specifically, is we create a community on campus outside of the classroom,” Walkenhorst said. “I cannot tell you how many students I’ve talked to at events who have told me, ‘I wouldn’t still be in school if not for the things you put on campus.’”
Walkenhorst further discussed various clubs on campus and how students can get connected and find people to support them in whatever ways they need. She said that students have the autonomy to start their own clubs, which have very achievable prerequisites and can receive funding from STLCC to grow the club and serve unique goals.
When asked if there were any events that needed more attention, Walkenhorst specifically brought up the midterm check-in and how useful for students that event is, since it helps them connect with campus resources and find information that can, in turn, help them finish the semester strong.

The Student Advocacy and Resource Center (SARC) is another resource for students. The team working within this program offers, to qualifying individuals, monthly help with groceries, which can include items for babies and hygiene products. They offer meals for on-campus assistance and even have options for the purchase of food through the partnership of STLCC’s service provider American Dining Creations.
Additionally, SARC helps students with crisis counseling, which can cover many topics and remains completely confidential. SARC can also assist with clothing, not only for casual and practical purposes, but also for business attire to help students when it comes time for interviews.
SARC has offices at each of the campuses, but can be found at the Student Center 223 for the Meramec campus.
STLCC also offers resume reviews, job simulations and even mock interviews as part of the advising services at the college. This is available through career advising online or in-person at the Financial Services Education Center 103 for the Meramec campus, but with offices at each of the campuses.
Resume reviews take time, and staff ask that students allow up to three business days to receive feedback, as they are performed by a staff member.
Job simulations are done through an external partnership with Forage. These are meant to give a small glimpse into what an average day in different positions looks like at some of the most recognizable companies in the United States.
Mock interviews can be scheduled with staff in-person or online and can help students polish their interview skills and develop strong answers to make them stand out among candidates.
Beyond personal and community support, STLCC’s library program offers many services beyond book and laptop rentals. The library has a full lineup of technology items that can be rented at no cost to students. This includes graphing calculators, camcorders and photography cameras (pending availability).
