Film, Faith, and Fashion. This is the motto of the new club coming to the Meramec campus.
The Pink Shirt Society, named by its club founder/current president Octaviah Johnson, and advised by Dr. Ware, is a society built on building friendships that lead into helping the community.
When asked about the inspiration for the club, Johnson said that when she was at Forest Park for a little while she had met a lot of people, women specifically, that were struggling with friendships as well as overall loneliness.
“They were having trouble talking to people in class and even outside of class. They were very drawn in and more so parasocial rather than face to face social,” said Johnson.
She wanted a place for people to have a chance to find community in one another, religious or not. “ So when I thought of the club it wasn’t necessarily just for Christian students. I just feel like my faith is just a big part of me,” she said.
There are more goals outside of just being a place to chat and make friends, though. With its main two points outside of faith being film, and fashion, this club aims to be a place for people to explore multiple interests they may have had without the pressure of having to stick and stay with one or join multiple clubs.
The Pink Shirt Society itself is a place to not only further any interests students may have, but one that gets them up and moving with peers, said Johnson.
The club president herself said that it’s the mode of making friends. And with the volunteer work this club plans to provide, she said participation will loog great on a resume or college application.

The club has scheduled the first meeting for Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:00pm. The location is to be determined but be on the lookout for signage.
