The weather on Monday, March 9, may have changed from sunny and pleasant to cloudy with chilling rain but the resolve of the STLCC-Meramec Women’s Softball team was not dampened.  The Lady Magic pulled together after a close 3-4 loss to Mineral Area College with a resounding victory of 9-2 in the second game of the double header.

Coach Linda McQueen has high hopes for her second season as head coach.

“We have girls who work hard and enjoy the game.” McQueen said.

McQueen a former star player for Meramec, was recently inducted into the Magic Hall of Fame.  McQueen describes her coaching style as people first; encouraging everyone to encourage others to do their best.

The focus of the first several weeks is fundamentals.  McQueen wants the basics to be muscle memory for the team.

“These first games are a learning process.” McQueen said.  The team is bonding and learning each others’ game styles.  From the look of the first several games they seem to be working well together.  With several returning players as well as strong recruits the Magic looks to improve on last year’s 13-30 record.

The games on Monday are a testament to the team’s resolve.  “They settled down after the first inning” McQueen said.  “They came out intense and stayed focused.” McQueen added.

McQueen’s ultimate goal is to take the team to the Nationals.  “They can attain what they set their sights to.”
