STLCC-Meramec students were recognized as emerging scholars in the Meramec cafeteria on Nov. 19.

The scene was set by white tablecloths and dim lighting, transforming the cafeteria into an elegant dining hall to celebrate the academic success of the emerging scholars.

Six students were honored at the banquet for completing coursework in two or more developmental areas including English, math and reading; successfully completed 24 or more credit hours; achieved a 3.5 or higher grade-point average; and participated in campus and community activities.

The Emerging Scholars program is in its second year at Meramec and the students involved are finding it to be very beneficial.

The program has been successful at STLCC-Florissant Valley for the last 18 years.

“It makes me see things in a broader and clearer way than I ever have before,” Emerging scholar Genevieve Hall said.

Hall was introduced to the program through her reading class. Hall plans to study abroad in England after finishing up at Meramec this spring.

Another emerging scholar, Bradley, attributes his success to programs like TRiO that are designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Other resources on campus that students can utilize include the Writing Lab, the Math Lab and the TRiO Lab.
