They are hard to miss. Running around the field, giving it there all for the fans. Dressed in their team’s colors they run the length of the field, knowing they can change the way the match ends.

Of course I am talking about one of the most American traditions of all time — the sports mascot.

Whether your mascot is Fred Bird of the Cardinals or Louie of the Blues mascots make and break teams with their performances on and off the field. With a flip there, a mascot-on-mascot fistfight there and harassing away fans over there, mascots give it their all 100 percent of the time.

The origin of the mascot ranges back to the Revolutionary War, where Eric the Bald Eagle led many of the guerilla style attacks on the British. Eric the Bald Eagle’s courage on the battlefield is one of the untold stories of the Revolutionary War that fueled the revolution and birthed our independence from Britain. (NONE OF THIS IS TRUE.)

The legacy of Eric the Bald Eagle lives on in our sports mascots today. Leading their team on the sideline, working harder than the coach and the star player. Some would say that mascots are the backbone on this country. Whether they are entertaining us during halftime by jumping through hoops of fire or throwing free shirts into the crowd mascots keep this nation free everyday.

So next time you see a mascot giving it his all, remember that they are the backbone of America. Remember to let them borrow your American flag pants for a while and give them the respect they earn everyday, working hard to make sure our sports teams win every single game.
