TIPS FROM AN ADVISOR FOR REGISTRATION

By: BRI HEANEY, NEWS EDITOR

Oct. 28, 2019 is the first day students will have the opportunity to register for Spring 2020 classes at STLCC-Meramec.

Lisa Gillis-Davis is the head of advising at Meramec and has some tips and tricks for students registering for spring classes.

“Students who have been here longer, I encourage them to register on the first date possible for them,” said Davis.

While Nov. 4 is when general registration opens for all current and prospective students, there are opportunities to sign up early.

“That gives our current students who are closest to graduating first dibs on classes,” said Davis.

Students who have 50 or more credits can register online starting on Oct 28. Students with 30 or more credits can register on Oct 29. On Oct 30, current students with 29 or less credits can begin registering for the spring.

Davis said that there is no reason to wait for this time of year to see an advisor and decide what classes to take.

“We have intentional outreach to try to bring in students in early in the semester to make plans for spring, and to try to teach the student that like figuring out what you need for courses happens all year long and then the dates and times for English 102 for example is what you want to figure out,” said Davis.

Davis encourages students to get an idea of what classes they need before the dates of registration open up.

“Get your game plan set up so you can register for classes at home in your pajamas instead of waiting here in long lines,” said Davis.

Advising has also rolled out some changes this semester that they implemented to streamline the process of enrolling, said Davis. Students now have an advisor that they are assigned to and can set up 30-minute appointments with that advisor throughout the school year.

“Our office encourages year-round meetings with your advisor just to make sure you are on track,” said Davis.

Davis said you can always change advisors or request a specific one. “It’s very easy for us to get students a different advisor,” said Davis. Having a smooth experience registering for classes is based off of one main concept, said Davis. Planning Ahead.

“Registration can take 60 seconds if you plan for it,” said Davis.
