As of March 1, 2010, Vice President of Student Affairs Stephen H. Petersen, Ed.D., is no longer employed at STLCC-Meramec. Campus President Paul Pai, Ed.D., confirmed that Petersen’s contract was not renewed. Petersen was hired the summer 2008 under a three-year probationary period.

“What I can tell you is that as of yesterday [March 1] afternoon, Dr. Stephen Petersen is no longer employed for St. Louis Community College,” Sharon Holt, Administrative assistant for student affairs, said. “His contract is out at the end of the fiscal year, June 30th. He will be receiving his compensation through that period.”

Under a probationary period, administrative officials can choose not to renew contracts, without any explanation, as long as the notification is sent three months before the expiration of the contract.

Pai did not elaborate on Petersen’s case because it is a “personnel issue.” Pai declined to comment on when the decision to let Petersen go was taken and the circumstances. He did say it was not a “unilateral decision.”

The reason as to why Petersen’s contract was not renewed remains unknown.

“Certainly there’s really not a whole much that I can say,” Pai said. “This is a personnel matter; we need to protect his privacy. Basically he’s gone, I’m confirming that he’s gone. Yesterday was his last day. That’s all I can say.”

Petersen declined to comment at this time.

Pai confirmed that he will be working together with all 14 administrators who directly reported to Petersen in order to split Petersen’s duties.

Steve Brady, director of campus life, is one of those administrators who reported directly to Petersen. Brady said the decision was unfortunate.

“[Petersen] is a friend of mine and a friend to students,” Brady said. “He has been a tireless advocate for student issues.”

Brady said the rest of the administration will work together to keep everything running properly.

“We will work on things as a team,” Brady said. “We will move forward.”

Holt a said that there will soon be a committee in place to find a replacement for Petersen within six months.

Some students are voicing their support for Petersen, who was one of the few administrators who attended Student Government Council meetings on a regular basis.

“To me, Dr. Petersen was an advocate for the students; he was always looking up for their best interest,” said Mike Roman, president of Meramec’s Student Government Council.

Roman said that although Petersen’s issue had not been discussed with other members of SGC, he said he felt other students had a similar opinion about the issue.

“I would say it is highly likely that the student government will let their opinion be known about this officially,” Roman said. “I would say it is highly likely because there have been other members that have expressed the same feelings.”

During the summer of 2008, Petersen was hired as Vice President of student affairs replacing Daniel Herbst. Before his time at Meramec, he worked for 24 years as the Vice President of Student affairs at the University of Central Missouri. He also worked for four years in student development at St. Louis University and Washington University.

Our campus needs to collectively ask itself if the decision to remove Dr. Stephen Petersen from his positoin was in the best interest of the students, staff, faculty, and administrators, as well as whether it was a good decision for our campus and college. If we agree, it indicates we have confidence in our president; if not, then we need to ask ourselves and our college leaders if Paul Pai is truly a good fit for our campus. Does he have an understanding of our students? our campus culture? our community? Does he make decisions based on information or ego? Is he leading our campus to the future? Unless we are willing to ask those difficult questions, we may be destined to live with an 'emperor who wears no clothes.'

Well, reliable sources are indicating that it all came down to the child care center issue. Because Dr. Petersen showed sympathy toward students who wanted to keep the center open, he was canned by President Pai. Read that last sentence again. The VP of Student Affairs was fired for being sympathetic to students exercising their first amendment right to protest the closing of the Meramec child care center. Stay classy, Meramec! President Pai and Chancellor Harris have clearly crossed a dangerous line. They need to go.

The lack of information that surrounds decisions is truly astounding. It leaves all, faculty, staff, and students, in a constant state of anxiety. Morale is worse that I have seen it in over 20 years. Dr. Petersen was a professional in every sense of the word--competent, engaging, and nice. It is a sad time for us all.

This is clearly an unpleasant display of egos and power at the helm - thus, a sad day for Meramec, a campus who has thrived on its student-centered approach until now. Dr. Petersen was the only student-centered administrator who truly cared about and actually knew the students. Not one other administrator was as accessible or even interested in how our students performed in and out of the classroom. He did not see students as just a number or statistic as others do. We have lost someone who could have (and was already doing so) impacted and improved the campus as a whole. When will those at the top realize that this is not a corporate entity? This is an educational institution and should be run as such. The deafening silence and fear that is now apparent within the faculty and staff is devestating to the college's "mission" to expand minds and change lives. It is time for the students, staff and faculty to take a stand. Let the power be wtihin the numbers, not with a few administrators who can't handle personality conflicts and differences of opinion in a professional manner.

As a student with a disability especially one of a psychiatric/mental nature, All I have ever asked is to be given opportunity to prove myself, the benefit of the doubt, and to be treated fairly. Dr. Petersen's handling of me in student affair matters was always way beyond what I could hope for. I was talked to and not at like others will do and it was always an equal exchange as we talked back and forth with each other and really listened to each other with an understanding and agreement reached in the end, not just "you will do this or else!"
As a student active in Student Government, I've always been confident in his decision-making knowing exactly where he stands (not on our side necessarily but with us, with our best interests in mind), that he would be fair and equitable and that we could count on his support and that has never wavered from the first time I met him after he first took over as VP of Student Affairs. I know he's tiredlessly advocated for each and every student (especially me) on our campus whether they know it or not. I cannot help but feel that he's no longer here because of that, because he looked out for student interests like part of his job description calls for because he genuinely cared about us and sought solutions that offered the best opportunities involved.
Finally I can honestly say on a personal note that if it wasn't for the support of Dr. Petersen and how he's consistently handled and dealt with me, I would not be at Meramec still. Despite academic success, accolades and others honors my social skills and interactions with others have at times been lacking and have resulted in unintentional consequences, which I have always owned up to if I was in the wrong and been willing to accept discipline for. I just want to get better and enrich myself with the experiences that St. Louis Community College has offered me when there were no other viable options for me. I've thought it was over for me on more than one occasion because of the errors in judgment I've made and misperceptions I've had but Dr. Petersen always worked with me on finding solutions and reassured me that one day I can proudly say I graduated because I've worked hard for it and deserve it. Too bad Dr. Petersen wasn't given the respect he deserves and has earned by serving us, the students, in the only and best way he knows how and if he's no longer here because of that, shame on whoever made that decision.

Walk anywhere on campus - the silence is deafening. Faculty, staff, students are stunned, and sad. We have lost a real leader on campus -- one of the few real leaders in the district. And -- the real point that needs to be made is this: this is only a symptom of the crisis at Meramec. The current President is (at best) incompetent and he is destroying the campus and/our reputation in the community each day he remains in his position. How can we let the Board of Trustees and Chancellor know what is going on out here? The Chancellor surveyed the FP campus when they had issues, why not us? Is she afraid of what she will learn? It is not surprising that folks who are posting here are afraid to post their names - they fear retribution by the President. HELLO DR HARRIS???? HELLO BOARD?????? HELP.

This is the beginning of the end of what was once a great St. Louis Institution. Talk about top heavy leadership with
downsizing of employees and full time faculty, even though you have an increase in enrollment!!. Been here before, didn't work then either.True leadership understands what is really important, we are there for the student's not for lop-sided leadership whose only jobs are to go to as many meetings as possible everyday, while they wittle away at the bottom, those who work closely to the student's. Yes we need a balanced budget but we are an educational institution, not a fortune 500 company. Dr. Petersen, a person of the people, for the people and by the people.

This is a loss to Meramec and to the STL community as Dr. Petersen is a honest, nice man with proven leadership abilities and I admire his integrity and strength. I'm a student who is faced with the loss of student services, such as childcare and I find the recent decision to remove Dr. Petersen to be another loss to the students. Dr. Petersen supported and understood our rights and I can say that the removal of Dr. Petersen along with the other cuts that Meramec has undergone will not silence me and I hope that people bring this forth to the board, to elected officials and ask for some accountability in the actions of administrators. I believe that Dr. Petersen was the best thing to happen to this campus in a long time. He was a true advocate for students and their rights. He fully supported the Student Activities Council and the need for student based events. This was a terrible decision on Dr. Pai’s part. There was a time when I truly believed that this school was the best place to be to earn an education. Now I think that the administration has turned their backs on the people who hold this school together. Child Care, Community Relations, Media, Student Affairs…. Who’s next? There are many ways to save money before people need to be let go. Why have none of these options been explored? I am not pleased in the slightest.

Why can't the college fire employees who truly need to go , instead of firing the ones who should really stay. Dr. Petersen was a victim of unchecked power!! Meramec has truly slipped in the past few years to a numbers- only operation. There is no quality, decency or common sense, but plenty of fear and mistrust. The campuses are being dismantled piece by piece to make more positions of power downtown.

Dr. Stephen Petersen has always been professional in my day-to-day dealings with him and his office. He proved to be a more than suitable replacement for his overwhelmed predecessor and it was more than evident to employees and students that he was our advocate, our mentor and our constituant. The silence in the halls of the St Louis Community College at Meramec is deafening - as is the soon-to-be silent Child Care Center, Community Relations Office, and who knows else? Perhaps a closer look should be paid to those in the positions of great authority who make these arbitrary decisions and our St Louis City downtown counterpart who issue their edicts from their high-rise podiums across from Busch Stadium? One can only hope the downtown dynasty is blessed with the same deafening silence we now are privy to here. CM

Childcare, Community Relations, and Dr. Petersen! As a student and an employee, I am truly upset and find that the leaders of this college are not truly in it for what is best for the students. I think our President and our Chancellor should know that the students and the employees are not happy with the decisions they have been making for us. I think we may want to consider this with future elections of Board Members (they have final say on terminations) and the hiring of our College Officers. There is an upcoming election on April 6 for district 4 which includes Parkway, Kirkwood, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Rockwood, Valley Park and Meramec Valley school districts and portions of Franklin and Jefferson counties. If you are a part of these areas you should consider looking at the candidates and deciding who might move this college in the direction we need to see it go.

I don't recognize this college anymore. When i started here in 2001 it was a great place to be. I loved it so much I decided to make higher education my career and now it's become a hostile, fearful place. Not only for work but for the students as well. I think this whole situation was handled badly but those in charge and they should be the ones being held responsible.

This was an unfair and unjust decision by the campus president.

Dr. Petersen is a wonderful man and he truly cares about the students, he had a open door policy and always made time for his students and treated them with both respect and equality. This saddens me and it is a huge loss for both the students and the administration that he worked with. It is my hope that the students and faculty will come forth and voice their opinion about yet another disasterous decision. No one should be under fear and/or worry about what and who will be next as we live in a democracy and Meramec is a public campus, not a concentration camp.

I am very saddened by this most recent blow to the Meramec family. First Community Relations and now this. It makes you wonder who or what is next.

this is a terrible loss to the campus and the college, and a terrible decision by the campus President. Dr Petersen is a true professional who was committed to Meramec students and to the community we serve.
