As of March 1, 2010, Vice President of Student Affairs Stephen H. Petersen, Ed.D., is no longer employed at STLCC-Meramec. Campus President Paul Pai, Ed.D., confirmed that Petersen’s contract was not renewed. Petersen was hired the summer 2008 under a three-year probationary period.

“What I can tell you is that as of yesterday [March 1] afternoon, Dr. Stephen Petersen is no longer employed for St. Louis Community College,” Sharon Holt, Administrative assistant for student affairs, said. “His contract is out at the end of the fiscal year, June 30th. He will be receiving his compensation through that period.”

Under a probationary period, administrative officials can choose not to renew contracts, without any explanation, as long as the notification is sent three months before the expiration of the contract.

Pai did not elaborate on Petersen’s case because it is a “personnel issue.” Pai declined to comment on when the decision to let Petersen go was taken and the circumstances. He did say it was not a “unilateral decision.”

The reason as to why Petersen’s contract was not renewed remains unknown.

“Certainly there’s really not a whole much that I can say,” Pai said. “This is a personnel matter; we need to protect his privacy. Basically he’s gone, I’m confirming that he’s gone. Yesterday was his last day. That’s all I can say.”

Petersen declined to comment at this time.

Pai confirmed that he will be working together with all 14 administrators who directly reported to Petersen in order to split Petersen’s duties.

Steve Brady, director of campus life, is one of those administrators who reported directly to Petersen. Brady said the decision was unfortunate.

“[Petersen] is a friend of mine and a friend to students,” Brady said. “He has been a tireless advocate for student issues.”

Brady said the rest of the administration will work together to keep everything running properly.

“We will work on things as a team,” Brady said. “We will move forward.”

Holt a said that there will soon be a committee in place to find a replacement for Petersen within six months.

Some students are voicing their support for Petersen, who was one of the few administrators who attended Student Government Council meetings on a regular basis.

“To me, Dr. Petersen was an advocate for the students; he was always looking up for their best interest,” said Mike Roman, president of Meramec’s Student Government Council.

Roman said that although Petersen’s issue had not been discussed with other members of SGC, he said he felt other students had a similar opinion about the issue.

“I would say it is highly likely that the student government will let their opinion be known about this officially,” Roman said. “I would say it is highly likely because there have been other members that have expressed the same feelings.”

During the summer of 2008, Petersen was hired as Vice President of student affairs replacing Daniel Herbst. Before his time at Meramec, he worked for 24 years as the Vice President of Student affairs at the University of Central Missouri. He also worked for four years in student development at St. Louis University and Washington University.

Why do you assume you know the "real" Stephen Petersen? Yes, can be a charmer, but why 3 jobs in 5 years? Hmmm makes you wonder.

Having known Dr. Petersen for years, I can attest to the fact that he isn't who he portrays himself to be. Even if his termination is bogus at your institution, let's just say that this is karma for all of his past sins.

How long is it going to take for the Chancellor to figure out what is going on at Meramec? Dr. Pai's intimidating and manipulative tactics are sucking the breath out of our campus. Dr. Harris has said that she trusts the leadership on each of the campuses, but how does she know what is really going on if she doesn't ask for feedback? Regrettably by not acting, the reflection (and responsiblity) rests as much on the Chancellor as it does on Dr. Pai. Please, Dr. Harris, do your job and free us from this tyrant that is killing the morale of our campus.

The morale of the employees on campus is horrible right now and that is transferring to the students. Because of the hatchet job being performed all over campus, Meramec now has a terrible reputation in the community. No nurse, no Community Relations, no child care!! Employees of 20+ years are being displaced and people who truly cared about the students, such as Dr. Petersen, are being let go for no apparent reason. The silence on this matter speaks for itself, doesn't it? One thing to remember, just as Dr. Petersen was on probation, so is Dr. Pai. Come to the Board meeting and make yourself heard!

As a graduate of STLCC-Meramec, I can say at this time that is nothing to be proud of. The current president, Dr. Paul Pai, has managed to almost single-handedly ruin the campus morale. I say single-handedly only because we all know he had to have help. This last act of "not renewing Dr. Stephen Petersen's contract" is the last straw. He can't give you a reason since there isn't one. Ego as a reason, could be the only truth. As alumni, faculty, staff, students and tax payers, we need to stand up and demand an accounting of what is really going on. If there were a poll taken on campus regarding who should really go and who should stay, we all know what the response would be. And be assured that from now on, any donations I make will be going to the institution that I received my bachelor's degree from, not STLCC-Meramec as I had been previously. This is the strongest protest I can make.

Dr. Petersen is the latest casualty of a campus president that is out of control. Dr. Pai came to Meramec with a questionable history of employment, and he has proceeded to wreak havoc on our campus. He removed Dr. Petersen because he was doing a good job, not the opposite. Just ask anyone at Meramec and they will tell you that Dr. Petersen worked tirelessly for everyone on campus - faculty, staff and students. But the underlying issue here is not Dr. Petersen. The real question is how the central administration of the College (Chancellor Harris and the Board of Trustees) could be so out of touch with what is going on at Meramec and so unaware of the demoralizing impact of Dr. Pai's leadership style. Hopefully the furor created by Dr. Petersen's removal will signal the Chancellor that it is time for a change in leadership at Meramec, and that President Pai must go before he totally destroys the morale of the campus. Please, Dr. Harris, remove Dr. Pai before it is too late. And while you're at it, please restore Dr. Petersen as our vice president. Everyone at Meramec knows that he and VP Wasson have been holding our campus together for the past two years, and we are confident that together they can provide the kind of leadership that will pull us out of the mess that President Pai has created.

I too want to applaud the work that The Montage is doing in response to this situation. Good work - keep it up!

Just a note: Dr Pai did NOT advocate for the child care center. He was silent on the matter. You know who advocated for their child care center? Marcia Pfeiffer at Flo Valley. And they still have theirs (now anyway). And right now, the district is considering spending $2 Millions dollars to buy the empty Circuit City building near FV for FV (when we are going to have a $6.5 Million Dollar shortfall in 2012)? You can complain about this - but it is evidence that the President at FV is a strong advocate for her campus, her faculty, and her students.

That is JUST one of the problems with Dr. Pai - he is not an effective advocate for this campus . . . .

The Montage is doing an excellent job of covering the termination of Petersen. As a journalist myself, I'm impressed with all the paper has done to expose the truth of Petersen's leave.

Nice work.

I'm going to miss Dr. Petersen. He was extremely helpful to me in dealing with some of my developmental students who needed far more than the "normal" level of assistance we offer students. he was competent, cheerful, and fair. I miss him already--especially since his departure comes before the end of the spring semester. Why couldn't this matter have waited until the end of the term at least? We've now had three incidents where student services have been affected for the worse--the loss of the campus nurse, the closing of the child care center, and the loss of Dr. Petersen. yet in october, the faculy heard a speaker--the president of a Florida community college--who presented his college's solutions to focusing on learning. So far, nothing has come from that inspirational moment--no committee, no document explaining changes that would benefit student learning; the silence has been deafening. And instead we get cuts to vital student services. That seems to be at odds with the message the fall professional development day speaker gave--at the college's invitation. I wonder why we bothered being inspired when the actions of the college since have focused on anything but improving student learning.

On a side note, i think one of the earlier poster is incorrect--Dr Pai did advocate for the child care center, but lost. The district made that decision--650K of a 160 million dollar budget--that's chump change. That's not real budget management--that's picking an easy target.

I have sincere appreciation and respect for Dr. Stephen Petersen and am very concerned about the decision-making ability of the college leadership. I was shocked at the decision to eliminate all of the campus community relations staff, graphic designers and photographers and the firing of Dr. Petersen seems like the final nail in the campus coffins. For every instance I was privileged to hear him speak, I was awed at his preparedness, knowledge and charismatic connection to his audience. He was true champion of students, faculty and staff and to fire someone as competent as this does not make any sense. The short-sightedness demonstrated by this recent irrational act of the St. Louis Community College leadership will likely compromise any support from the students, faculty and staff and possibly even the community as each of these groups speak to their circle of influence. I will be voting on April 6 and I will be speaking to my family and friends.

I agree that both the students and the faculty need to go forth regarding the release of Dr. Petersen. I'm going to continue to express my First Amendment right to my "Freedom Of Speech" and further state that it is my opinion that President Pai needs to understand and listen to what the students, and the faculty on his campus want. I also want to convey that I'm not speaking for them, only I, and I want to express that it appears that I am one of many who share the same view as I read through the comments posted. The funny thing is, Dr. Petersen was 1 of 33 selected to attend the prestigious executive leadership institute in December among the community colleges and it further states that this "recognizes community college leaders" and now he's no longer at Meramec. This seems to smell........I will be at the next Board of Trustees Meeting as I attend every meeting and I have NO INTENTIONS to stop, this is my fundamental legal right and it's my hope that those who have posted comments will go forth and demand some accountability for the lack of checks and balances. I had several interactions with Dr. Peterson during his tenure on campus. I found him to be concerned for students, faculty, and classified staff. He was also very concerned with the way continuing part-time employees were treated. The problem is that Dr. Peterson was not be a puppet. He stood up and spoke his mind, gave opinions that at times went against the status quo. Hence, those who wanted a puppet and not someone who would speak his mind took the unfortunate step (for Dr. Peterson) of removing him. The moral at Meramec has never been lower. People are looking over their shoulders wondering if they are the next ... The changes that need to be made need at Meramec and downtown need to start at the top, not at the bottom. As you might be able to tell, I am an employee and need to post as an anonymous person for my own self-preservation. For Dr. Peterson, thank you for what you tried to do.

Oooh, ouch! ugh! Is this now the meaning of "changing lives" at Meramec ???
On the one hand the chancellor and board are crying about recruitment and retention, on the other they destroy those who carry the load. I cry for the child care center, the children who will not be served, the students who will not be supported in improving the quality of their lives through education here at Meramec, so that their children will have to live with less, or they'll make adjustments and just go somewhere else. That is pretty sad, since community colleges nation wide are bursting at the seams! As many of us know, Dr. Peterson was one of the best things to happen to this campus in a long time. He is knowledgable, professional, highly competent, personable, and caring about students, faculty. staff. He is a kind person, a gentle soul and yet strong enough to have taken on the weight of the burdens and concerns of students and faculty with great respect and diplomacy. I'll be at the Cosand Center March 25th, at 7 pm for that board meeting. Has anyone called the press?

I keep trying to figure out what we can do in response. In the meantime, I do know that I (as an individual) can refrain from any more donations to the Foundation as long as Paul Pai is President. Maybe if more people did this, someone would pay attention.

Zelma Harris and our board are as worthless as Paul Pai. They do not care about the community college or students. They have no business being in leadership positions at our institution.
