Craig Larson cutting the cake on his first Board of Trustees Meeting

In high school there is always drama. Craig Larson, elected on April 6 as a new Board of Trustee member, dealt with secondary-education issues for a good portion of his life: 27 years in Parkway, three years in Clayton and seven years at Rockwood.

Could those 37-plus years prepare him for a board meeting, “STLCC-Style”?

At around 7:30 p.m, at the Forest Park campus, the board prepared to welcome their – as one member put it – “new addition to the family.” There was fruit punch, coffee and vanilla cake with his name written in bright blue icing. Not part of the welcoming scene, were the faculty and students that had come to the meeting to express their grievances with the college in two main issues, the dismissal of Stephen Petersen and the closing of the child care center.

“I am speaking tonight as a proud faculty member. My pride is not in myself. It is and always has been in my profession and in this institution, but because of the abrupt, mid-semester dismissal of vice president Stephen Petersen, my faith and confidence in this institution has been shaken,” said John Messmer, Ph.D., political science professor at STLCC-Meramec.

Messmer, who had been recognized earlier at this meeting for an award received, said that the recognition from the board did not mean as much as it would have meant before.

“It was an honor, but I must be perfectly honest: being appreciated by this body today doesn’t mean as much as it would have in the past,” Messmer said. “Because in the past I had greater pride in this body; I had greater respect for its leadership; I had a more profound confidence in its ability to do what was right for my campus. I lack that confidence today.”

Another one to speak at the meeting was Meramec student Gyla Myers, who has attended every board meeting since the decision to close the child care center was made in November 2009.

“Welcome Dr. Larson, you will get to know me very well because I come to each and every meeting,” Myers said. “And I am not planning on stopping.”

At the meeting, Myers had a PowerPoint presentation of emails sent to and from the STLCC Chancellor, Zelema Harris, Ed.D., and Meramec president Paul Pai, Ed.D.

In one of the e-mails, which Myers obtained through Sunshine Law requests, Pai  warns Harris that Myers and other students are planning to attend a board meeting to protest the child care center closing decision as well as the Petersen decision.

“The SGC only planned to submit their support to Dr. Petersen, but nothing else… [part of the email had been blacked out]…but they may do something,” stated Pai in the e-mail.  “My thoughts are that they may join the students on Thursday at the board meeting. I will discover more and keep you updated tomorrow… Gyla Myers returned to SGC today as part of PTK club representatives, still trying.”

Myers said she felt this was a personal attack.

“I would like to know what ‘still trying’ means,” Myers said.

However, smiling at almost all times, Larson made it through the meeting. At the end, Larson said in an interview that as a high school principal he wanted to see his students involved and at tonight’s meeting he was impressed with the passion of the students.

“An overall impression I get is the passion in the room; people care about issues; they care about their own education; they care about the community college system; they worry about various issues and decisions” Larson said. “That’s a wonderful thing.”

He said there was a difference between the way high school students and college students voiced their opinions about different issues.

“High school students seem to get so involved in their own immediate issues; they don’t always rally to the defense of a particular issue at the school level,” Larson said. “I find what we are seeing here is a healthy sign for America.”

Larson said he knows he is a brand new member and cannot make promises over what the outcome of the issues concerning the students will be.

“But one thing I heard tonight that I think the board is going to be responsive to… is the healing that Meramec needs,” Larson said. “Because there’s been some difficult things – several different issues – that have made the people at Meramec feel uncomfortable…I think there is no question that the board needs to expect to respond to that issue.”

The presence of a “Rat” is actually the presence of a “Pig” it appears I misspoke. Now, would you like me to proceed? The proof lies within the depositions I’ve obtained. Now, I suggest you stop your pathetic attempts to discredit my sister. As for denying her “freedom of speech” I can prove that too and it happens to be a matter of record that she was denied minutes at a previous BOT meeting per BOT policy among other documentation I’ve incurred and shared with my fellow “Missouri & Illinois practicing attorneys.” And FYI……good luck trying to retract this and put forth into policy after the fact! I’d also like to reiterate that she is a student at your institution and your comments and actions towards her are grossly inappropriate and I suggest you refrain from your “hostile redundant” comments and continued abuse as we attempt to make the best of our Mother’s Day Weekend. By all means, please present your proof of the presence of a "rat." So far there is none. Please address how freedom of speech has been suppressed specifically, and also how the words "still trying" boost your theory insteade of mine.

As a practicing attorney for 15 + years and a graduate from University of Illinois School of Law I’d like to say a couple of things. First of all, I believe my sister was grossly underestimated in regards to her passion, determination & perseverance with regard to the situation. As for the further dismal attempts towards my sister & the comments “Common Sense” & “Armchair Litigators,” I find these statements ignorant, weak & futile at best, I suggest you familiarize yourself with a court of law and the concepts of presenting a case. Looking at the facts, as an attorney, my overall consensus is “I smell a rat.” Now, we can debate all day long if you’d like and I suspect that you will address nothing more than mere diversions as it must be embarrassing to have a student presenting such damning information and facts that seem to continue to be omitted. In closing I’d also like to address your character as Gyla Myers is the mother of 2 darling little girls, she’s the daughter of a wonderful father and a daughter & product of a wonderful, caring, loving mother that we lost 7 months ago, she’s more than a student at your institution and your comments are GROSSLY INAPPOPRIATE and might I add that if you have the gift of parenthood, Happy Mother’s Day to you!

It was not an attack post. It was a common sense post. a woman who has never been denied time to speak her mind and lobby the board for her cause has no reason to think that her speech is being suppressed.

As for the emails, there is absolutely nothing there. If there was, why didn't she present those emails. If you all are holding on the the "still trying" statement as a smoking gun of a conspiracy to silence a student, you all are really grasping at straws. Allow me to present an alternative theory "still trying" was referring to Gyla still trying to keep the child care center open. BOOM. And that, my armchair litigators, is reasonable doubt.

In regards to "A Woman fighting for the Sake of Fighting" I'd probably fight too due to the email correspondence among administrators about Gyla Myers, I'd fight to clear my name as this was clearly an attempt of defamation of character. However; I'd also hire an attorney as it's rather conspicuous to be this concerned over a student speaking at BOT meetings. I think the more accurate "Interest Piece" should state something along the lines of "Bringing down the Hierarchy one at a time." This is much more probable and worthy of reading and printing for that matter! And I suppose the Professor that was honored earlier and his statement has no merit? Are we going to attempt to discredit our faculty too and/or is this next? Flunky, Lackey, these are the two terms that come to mind with regard to a previous attack post.

Nice try there "anonymous" aka "something or someone appears guilty".......I don't think this is about "REDUNDANT" I think this is about "THE TRUTH" and I especially like the emails that were presented as it appears she has some facts that reflect THE TRUTH among some other juicy details that appeared in writing none the less and the documentation presented supports her concerns and complaints. This is about moral and ethics and the only one who's attempting to maintain the "status quo" is you! Maybe the US Attorney would be interested in the facts surrounding the grant she presented, after all this is federal money, oh but that's right, she just wants her way right???? Nice try lackey!

Could someone please explain to me how a person who has been given an opportunity to speak every time they have asked despite her increasingly redundant and hostile attitude and statements honestly believe that their "freedom of speech" is being suppressed?

"Freedom of Speech" does not mean getting your way, you do know that right?

I look forward to the next human interest piece "A Woman Fighting for the Sake of Fighting"

Kudos to John Messmer, Miss Myers and Mr. Roman....way to go....the board needs to intervine and if they're not willing to act, then get out! Enough damage has been done and there are no attempts to make things right at the Meramec campus. I want to send a huge thank you to the Montage, both Carlos and Andrea, they've exceeded the call of duty with regard to journalism, way to go. Keep it up Meramec and eventually the board will be forced to act and we can move past the disaster we're left to deal with.

Wish I could have been there. Bravo to John Messmer and for the students who continue to stand up for what is right.

Congrats to Dr. Larson, hopefully the BOT views this as CHANGE as the taxpayers voted for change. I want to also commend those who spoke, they were all wonderful. I feel terrible for Dr. Petersen, the students, the faculty and the Meramec campus. It is time that the BOT enforces their power and reinstates Dr. Petersen and kicks Zelema to the curb, enough is enough! I'll surely be at the next meeting to follow this story, it's surely getting hot in these meetings!
