In spring 2010, the leave of former Meramec Vice President of Student Affairs Stephen Petersen, Ed. D, not only came abruptly but without answer. On March 1, Petersen received notice from former President Paul Pai, Ed. D, indicating that Petersen's contract would not be renewed and furthemore that it would be his last day at Meramec.

 With the BP oil crisis nearing its third month, WNBR (World Naked Bike Ride) organization made their presence known. On June 19, 2010 approximately 600 environmentalists, extremists, naturalists, and bike enthusiasts joined for the third annual world naked bike ride through St. Louis, MO.

Board of Trustees Approve Interim President for STLCC-Meramec

On Wednesday, May 19 the Board of Trustees named Zerrie Campbell as the new Interim college president for STLCC-Meramec. Campbell will assume her responsibilities as interim president on Aug. 9 and will hold the position until Oct. 6, 2011.

Scanning our budget

The price of keeping Meramec’s food services

At the March board of trustees meeting, students objected to St. Louis Community College renewing its contract with Treat America for the delivery of dining, catering and snack food vending services. As a result, the board has reconsidered its decision to renew the contract for two years and now plans to renew the contract for just one year and appraise alternatives.

International Festival

International Club celebrates diversity

Members of the St. Louis community gathered for an international festival at STLCC-Meramec last month. The festival, sponsored by the International Club, featured a variety of singers, dancers, musicians and food from around the `world.

Pre-Med Club holds fundraiser for malnourished children in Haiti

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit the Caribbean nation of Haiti in January and volunteers throughout the world responded by organizing fundraisers to send aid, money and medical supplies to help in the recovery effort. At STLCC-Meramec, members of the Pre-Med Club, founded by Emi Gardner and faulty advisor Ginny McDonald, discovered a way to raise money for those still in need.

Car wash raises $200 for struggling students seeking child care services

A black Ford pickup truck pulled into STLCC-Meramec’s parking lot on April 17 to get a scrub down at a car wash fundraiser. The event was held by student parents to raise money for those struggling to find proper child care services. The door of the truck opened as Bob Nelson, former board of trustees member, stepped out to get his pickup washed with a donation in hand.

The Atlantic hurricane season of 2005 left many areas in the United States in great distress, most significantly the city of New Orleans, La. Hurricane Katrina left 80 percent of the city under water and although the disaster occurred nearly half a decade ago, destruction is still evident and citizens of New Orleans are continuing to rebuild the city.

On March 2, Paul Pai, president of the STLCC-Meramec campus, announced to his staff that Stephen Petersen, vice president of student affairs, was no longer with the college because Pai had made the decision, approved by the chancellor, to not renew Petersen’s contract.

 According to STLCC-Meramec campus police, between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., on April 14, a white Chevrolet 3500 Box truck was broken into and the contents of a safe box onboard were stolen.

The election results for the Missouri Public Interest Research Group (MoPIRG) Reaffirmation were ratified by the Student Governance Council (SGC) on March 23. Students voted for the $7 removable fee paid to MoPIRG at the time of class registration each semester to be taken off registration forms.

In 2009 the Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE) made a report based on visits done to all state public colleges and universities. According to the MDHE, “the point of these visits and the report was to collect information on campus conditions and to develop a baseline on which future reviews would be based.”

STLCC-Meramec offers volunteer income tax assistance to students

April 15 can be the most dreaded day of the year. With several tax forms to sort through combined with the possibility of simple mistakes that affect the pocketbook, it’s no wonder tax season is stressful. A program at Meramec called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is providing free tax services for students, staff, faculty and community members.
