By 12:30 p.m., the wicker basket of free condoms on the welcome table was empty. The free condoms were part of this year’s “Healthy Sex and Relationship” day.
Those on campus between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Feb. 10 had the opportunity to score “sexy cupcakes,” free protection and copious amounts of information about interpersonal relationships, sexual safety and well-being in the West Hall of the Student Center.
This annual event, hosted by Student Activities Council, began nearly six years ago with Heather Coil, now Meramec alumnus, during her term as SAC President.
The event is coordinated in conjunction with Valentine’s Day, an opportunity to encourage students to get informed and be safe, said Christopher Bathe, SAC faculty advisor.
Also present at the event were community organizations, such as the Coalition for Healthy African American Relationships and Marriages, Planned Parenthood, St. Louis Effort for AIDS, and Meramec’s own counseling center.
Collectively, the tables offered a host of educational pamphlets and papers, or advertised services, such as Planned Parenthood’s free HIV screening on the first Thursday of every month.
At the SAC table, upon answering a “Fact or Crap” trivia question about sex health, participants received a vanilla or chocolate sexy cupcake, iced and with either the male or female symbol on top.
