America should build bridges, not walls

What's important to you, America? What problems facing America deserve the most attention? Healthcare? Pish-posh. Multi-trillion dollar debt? Hooey! War? Bullroar! Failing economy? Don't be silly!

Congress has decided for you; it's the Mexicans that are threatening your livelihood. According to TIME magazine, after years of debate, Congress has decided to invest $1.2 billion to begin working on a 650-mile portion of a wall that may eventually line the entire Mexican-American border.

So much for "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The new America has no interest in welcoming strangers and no interest helping our fellow man.

Where has my America gone?

She was just here a moment ago. My America would know that she has no business building a multi-billion dollar wall when we have millions of Americans without health care. She would surely know that we cannot afford this wall with the whole nation suffering in economy woes.

In case any have forgotten, nearly every single American today is here thanks to the possibility of immigrating from some far away country. Americans owe their citizenship, their lives and fortune here to their brave and poverty stricken ancestors who no doubt came here centuries ago looking for opportunity.

America will construct a wall, effectively saying "NOT WELCOME," to people who only want to improve their lives, like our ancestors. My America seems to be anti-social now. We do not welcome those who are different. Gone are the proud moments of referring to America as the "melting pot" of the world. We reject other nations who do not support us, bully those who challenge us, and allow ignorance to fuel our ever-increasing egos (freedom fries, anyone?).

This new America is not worried about her reputation, no rest for the tired, no money for the poor, and no freedom for those obnoxious, huddled masses.

So for the people without health care, for those suffering most from the failing economy, or those dying in Iraq because of inadequate equipment, this 1.2 billion being spent on a fence is proof that America does not have her priorities straight. She seems to no longer care about her citizens, her debt, her economy, or her war. She only wants to keep others away, to say "KEEP OFF THE GRASS." Rather than support her own people, she has chosen to reject others.

"Go back to where you came from," cries America. The irony seems lost on the public. This is not my America. America can still bring down these walls. America can still build bridges.

My America is not dead yet.
